Why Do You Have to Let the Drug Subutex Dissolve Under the Tongue Rather Than Swallow Like Other Pills?

Question by Mick315: Why do you have to let the drug Subutex dissolve under the tongue rather than swallow like other pills?
The drug Subutex (and Suboxone) is used for treatment for opiate(narcotic) dependence; as is Methadone. However, with Methadone all one needs to do is swallow the pill, with Subutex and Suboxone it must be dissolved slowly under the tongue–sublingually. I don’t like the taste and would prefer to simply swallow the pills, but the Dr. and pharmacist say allow it to dissolve slowly until gone under the tongue. Will I start to have withdrawals if I swallow the pill instead of allowing it to dissolve? Also, I’m taking a daily total of 8mgs…2mgs x 4per day. Is that the usual dosage? What are dosages that seem to work the best or are prescribed most frequently?

Methadone or Subutex?

Question by Gilla B: Methadone or Subutex?
Which one is easier to detox from? I have heard horror stories about both of them. People say that sub is just as hard to get off of as the methadone. Most Dr’s say Sub is easier.. I am just curious. My son is on Subutex. Thanks!

Hi,
Methadone is terribly difficult to withdraw from. You would need someone to reduce the dosage very slowly (say 5mg per week for higher doses and 2mg per week when you get to the lower doses). So if say you were on 40mg of Methadone for a couple of months, you can imagine how long the taper process itself will take.

Subutex on the hand is a very strange molecule. Some people have no withdrawals at all when stopping, but a great number of people do notice withdrawals. The withdrawals from Subutex can last up to 15-20 days for the physical and acute symptoms. However the withdrawals are much milder than any other opioids.

Hi,

Are you getting pains in knees all the times OR only when you are trying to bend down or sitting / standing up?

To reduce knee pains, pour hot water on your knees while taking bath. If possible, go to swimming (classes). These are the tips my PCP told me to reduce the pains. Use “Bengay” OR “Icy Hotpatch” to relieve the pains. They are OK. I use them when i could not bear pains.
