What Is the Conventional Detox for Opiates?
Question by Paul: What is the conventional detox for opiates?
A patient was detoxed from a high milligram of opiates by using one night of phenobarbital and then the prescribed does of Loritab. I assumed the correct detox from opiate abuse was methadone. The hospital didn’t know the true elevated dosage the patient was taking. The result was that the 77 year old patient was rendered senile with just a few days.
Shouldn’t this patient have been detoxed using methadone?

There are multiple ways to detox a patient from opiates. Methadone is not one of them; methadone is itself an opiate, so, technically, any patient prescribed it is still on opiates. (There’s a reason it’s called “methadone maintenance.”)
Need Information on Methadone Addicitions?
Question by Shirley S: Need information on methadone addicitions?
My daughter has been going to a methadone clinic for about 2 years trying to break an addicition to other drugs. She has also went back to other drugs. A few days ago, she got in some trouble and was taken to jail. Am I wrong to leave her there until she dries out, and how long does it take?

How Can I Manage Pain While on Suboxone?
Question by Peter: how can I manage pain while on suboxone?
I am a long time heroin addict. I have been off heroin and on suboxone for 2 years now. I take the generic version that does not contain naloxone. One of the benifits of being clean is having dental insurance and after years of neglect I am finally getting my teeth fixed. Today I have an appointment to get 6 of them pulled out. I will be under IV sedation but when I awake I have been warned that I will be in pain. I planned on not taking Suboxone for days prior to the proceedure but I didnt stop taking it. Buprenorphine blocks the effects of other opiates and honestly I shouldn’t even take them. I need non narcotic ways to manage the pain. I do have some methadone (I keep it for when I want to detox myself off suboxone) but if I am correct that has the same opiate blocking characteristics as suboxone and the suboxone would block the methadone anyway. Any advice is appreicated. I am prepared to live thru the pain to get these teeth pulled I just want as easy a time as possible. Thank you.
