How Do I Measure Liquid Methadone?

Question by Gasmask2012: How do I measure liquid methadone?
I’m a methadone maintenance patient and I am currently receiving what’s called “take homes” which is where the patient gets the privilege of being able to take their prescribed medication’s homes with them, rather than having to follow the inconvenient schedules of the clinics dosing hours. My question is strictly out of curiosity because im trying to taper myself down gradually and get out of the clinic for good. MY question is in regards to the equivalency of ml vs. mg., and how to split and measure a dose of a 320 mg bottle of liquid into 40 milligram bottles. how do i measure ml by mg and know how much is what? does anyone know any methods of measuring liquid methadone by the mg at home? thankyou for your time.

In the US there are 10mg for every 1ml of liquid methadone. If you want to measure 40mg you would get a dosing syringe (can be bough at Walgreens) and draw up 4ml.

It is a really bad idea to taper yourself though. It almost always fail. If you want to get off methadone successfully you have to do it the right way and that is to go down a little at a time for many months. A proper methadone taper can take over a year. If you try to do it quickly you will fail. I can almost guarantee you that. A quick taper would leave you with severe withdrawal symptoms that can last for months. Most people relapse before those few months are up.
If you want what’s best for you I highly recommend that you talk to your counselor and set up a taper schedule at the clinic.
