What Is the Best Pain Med for Back Pain?

Question by Rob M: what is the best pain med for back pain?
I have had a back problem for 4 years and even had a fusion 3 years ago and have been on hydrocodone ever since. No matter how much I take, it just doesnt work. What is the best med to take for pain relief other than oxycontin? I am not interested in getting high, I just want a break from the constant pain. Is methadone effective? I have heard it doesnt get you high. Any suggestions?

Pain management is tricky. There is no one solution that works for everyone. It depends on the kind of pain (is it bone, is it muscles, is it nerves.) For bone the best thing is Ibprofien or its many relatives like celabrex, sulindac, napracin, etc… unfortunately long term use of these do things like kill your kidneys. For muscle pain there are muscle relaxants.

The problem with narcotics is that really they don’t work to resolve the pain, they just take the edge off or make you high so you ignore the pain. Methadone isn’t a lot different- and yes, it gets you high- it is typically a last resort pain med for after your tolerance of everything else is super high.

There are things like TENS devices that are very effective for some. There are surgeries that kill the nerves in your back (but those aren’t guaranteed to work.)

The best bet is to find a good pain clinic in your area and see what solutions they have. They can use anything from drugs to injections to acupuncture and more.

i would not go any where near methadone. once you’re on methadone, like for a good amount of time, it is really hard to get off of.
you have built up a tolerance and you really need to discuss this with your doctor. you will probably go into withdrawal if you stop taking the medicine.
have you looked into acupuncture? it actually does amazing things. it doesn’t hurt and it’s not killing your liver.
i would not go near oxy’s either if i were you. pain meds aren’t something to mess around with. they are so dangerous. i know so many people who had back problems, and never did drugs or drank and ended up shooting heroin because they were on the pain meds for so long and they stopped working.
discuss what you are going through with your doctor and express your concern for not going on oxy’s and methadone. i would really stay away from both of those.
