Methadone/opiates and Pregnancy – for Medical Professionals Only, Please.?

Question by troubledinparadise: Methadone/opiates and pregnancy – For medical professionals only, please.?
I am a 32 y/o woman with extreme back & neck pain which has gotten progressively worse over the last 12 years. 2+ years ago when I became pregnant (unexpectedly) I was on very high amounts of opiate pain medications (160 mg oxycontin, 10-15 percocets/day, + anti-depressants, Vallium, etc.). Immediately upon finding I was pregnant I began speaking with my doctors about decreasing and eventually getting off all medications. I was very concerned about my baby being born addicted and having to go through withdrawal symptoms and after much debate, my doctor (OB and pain management) assured me it was safe for me to detox off of my medication. It was difficult but I did it. I ceased most meds and decreased the opiates (oxycontin) to 10 mg. twice a day which my OB and the local university hospital decided was where I should stay through delivery.

What Is Better? Subxone or Methadone?

Question by stevies.beloved: What is better? Subxone or Methadone?
I am having problems finding a good medication for my addiction to dilaudid. Can anyone out there help me?

Best answer:

Answer by Christy SD Nurse
Doctors vary in their reasoning as to what is best. In my experience as a nurse at a treatment facility is that Subxone is the way to go. However it needs to be taken correctly, twice a day, and with a tapering schedule over about 7-10 days..no cheating…it is hard to do this on your own. You are still going to be miserable and have intense cravings. Your body must be clear of opiates before beginning the treatment or you will get very sick.

I just detoxed from oxycodone, shooting 15-18 per day intraveneously. I tried to do it myself, but ended up in hospital. then detox center. Could I have died from this had I not sought medical help?

It is rare to die from opiate withdrawal, but not unheard of. It’s not nearly as common as death from alcohol, benzo, or barbiturate withdrawal.

Opiate withdrawal excites the CNS and raises blood pressure immensely. A person withdrawing from large amounts of opiates can have a heart attack, stroke, or seizure.
