Question by highballer906: PLEASE PLEASE ANSWER question re. MTHADONE all answers highly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
i am on methadone, i will probably be on it forever, this time arount i have stuck to a really low dose, prob i want to have children some day. I heard from my clinic doctor as well as mothers that 40 mls and lower means very good chance baby will have no or miniscual withdrawal. i want to be at 15-20 mls at pregnancy. I want to have kids, keep in mind coming off methadone is not an options, meth is to me what insulin is to diabetic, i have a disease none the less anyway you look at it and this is my “medication” does anybody know of or heard of having a child on meth, short and long term effects. esp. being at a low dose vs. high which is guaranteed the baby will have a morphine drip and high withdrawal on a high ml’s. Please help all answers highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Wow, thanks for all of these answers, just some small tidbits, doctors dont know a thing about methadone and can’t precribe it unless they go through training, the best person with most experience would be the actual methadone doctor.as per health insurance, i am thankfully in Canada and have no use for that lol. Also if you are on methadone and get pregnant, they will NOT take you off of methadone, as this will put your baby in shock and crisis situation most likely miscarriage or stillborn. Just to let ya know. Keep the answers coming, the more perspective the better.
also i know exactly WHAT methadone is and isn’t as well as any other opiate, narcoyic on the face of this earth, i could probably recite any cps category of controlled substance off by heart. I just want to know how it will affect/effect my baby in the future.
One more thing, thank you Melissa for the insight i used to work with children who had fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and the comparison by that and narcotics is very encouraging.
excellent resources, loves to answer, much enlightenment, thanks.

Even a low dose can cause a child to go through withdrawl but the lower the dose, the better for the child and the better the chance of no withdrawl. Hopefully you will be off meth one day but I understand you may not. Typically a meth addicted child cries a lot during infancy, has trouble being comforted, is irritable, and has trouble feeding at times. As they get older, self soothing may be hard and attention span is limited. Many children with meth addiction have ADHD or ADD symptoms through-out young childhood. I don’t know how long this lasts but I know through childhood at least. It may extend throughout their life. You can still have children, healthy children but the lower your dose the better for the child.

I am not going to even attempt to misguide you here and I hope no-one else does either! the only one who has a right to answer such a serious question is your doctor . not someone who doesn’t know you , not someone who has been thru it! your body is yours, and your medical history is yours! and when babies are involved it makes it all the more serious! trust you doctor! even before a meth clinic! a good doctor will not steer you wrong I promise! I know it is not the answer you may be looking for , but it is the right answer for your childs sake. I will keep you in my happy thoughts.
