My dad was on methadone for over 30 years. Its one of those controversial treatments. I don’t dispute the fact that it is a life saving treatment. There are honest doctors that can use it to wean you off drugs with it and have great success. The large problem areas are the methadone “clinics”. Many people go there for treatment expecting a gradual reduction which never comes. Here the cost for methadone is 10-20 per day and either 25 or 50 a month for a counseling session. So they are making too much money off of it. Instead of gradually reducing the amount to get people off of it, they increase the dose as the patients become tolerant of it. There are some private doctors that will do methadone treatment but you really need to discuss it over with several before making a decision. Some of these doctors will try to wean you off of the methadone too fast. You have to find a doctor with a reasonable plan of care. I remember watching HBO a few months ago and there is a special called Methadonia which if you can watch that, they really portray the methadone clinics fairly for the most part. If you do decide to seek treatment at a clinic make sure that your doctor is aware that you are there to quit and not for maintenance therapy! Good luck on trying to help yourself. The type of addiction that requires this type of treatment is a hard journey and congrats on making that decision!
