Addicts who use methadone to help rid themselves of an addiction to opiate drugs are often then faced with the problem of how to beat methadone addiction.

Methadone, a synthetic opiate developed in Germany in the early part of the 20th century, has been successfully administered to heroin addicts and those addicted to other strong opiates in order to minimize the addict’s cravings for the original drug and suppress the many withdrawal symptoms experienced during the methadone detox process, including nausea, depression, fatigue and irritability.

Unfortunately, turning to methadone during heroin or opiate detox can cause the addict to become addicted to methadone itself. It is important that the methadone addict rely on a support system as well as medical supervision in order to overcome methadone addiction, which can be even more stressful than overcoming heroin addiction, causing some of the same side effects such as insomnia, cravings, vomiting and anxiety.    Read more...

Question by Heroin Girl: I have questions and concerns about “MEDICAL DETOX” from someone that’s experienced it and not google info.?
I am currently on 200 mg of methadone. I’ve been on it for a couple of years and next month I will be going to a clinic for medical detox. Basically, if you’ve experienced it, you know it’s when you’re put under anesthesia and they withdraw you completely. After the procedure, I’ve been told I’ll be given a Naltrexone implant to block receptors. This is costing over $ 10,000, and that’s including round the clock medical care for 4 days after the procedure. After that, I’ll be flying home to NY and then resting a day before getting on a plane and going to England where I’ll be for the next year. My major question from someone that’s been through this, is am I going to be too “out of it” on the medications I’m given after the procedure to function in an airport? How bad are the withdrawal symptoms after the treatment and will I be too sick to fly or will I just sleep because of the meds I’ll be taking? I’ve been an addict since I was 14 and I’m not looking for judgement. I’m only looking or answers to medical questions. Methadone is an extremely powerful synthetic opiate. Methadone treatment is often times used for help with the withdrawal symptoms that are associated with cocaine, heroine, and other substance addictions. If you go for treatment for methadone addiction with one of these drugs and methadone treatment is what is decided to be the best way for you to get clean, you may be required to go to a facility or doctor and get a daily dosage of methadone. What this means is you will go to a methadone clinic every day and you will be dosed by a nurse.

This is time consuming and is really a pain in the butt but it does work and heroin addicts do use to for heroin detox. I have tried this method and it is very addicting and may be harder to get off than heroin because it legal and easy to get. I would advise against getting on methadone maintenance unless nothing else works for you.    Read more...
