Ask about background, abuse (or lack of), upbringing.

Ask if there was a trigger that set the person off. Ie: Did they begin using shortly after a major trauma

Ask about patterns of drug use. Ie: Did the person start off with just pot/occasional party drugs and work up to the ‘bad’ ones or did they start off on a heavy drug?

Ask about attempts at withdrawal.

Ask how old the person started using at. Was peer pressure the cause

Ask if the person feels there is adequate education/withdrawal or harm minimization services available to them. Are they happy with the options open to them & the availability. If they take Heroin, did they ever attempt to get into a detox clinic? Was the waiting list too long. Did they relapse or delay treatment due to lack of vacancies.

It depends. What drugs are you talking about? Prescription drugs or illegal narcotics? Are you talking about the abuse of drugs or how the right drugs can save lives?

Let’s assume we’re talking about illegal drugs:

1. What circumstances led you to drugs? Poverty? Friends? Family?
2.How old were you when you started?
3. What drugs did you use?
4. In what quantity did you use them? How frequently did you use them?
5. How did you support your drug use?
6. Describe your “high.” What did it feel like? How long did it last?
7. Describe coming down. What did withdrawal feel like?
8. Are you addicted? Have you sought help with your addiction?
9. Has drug use cost you a job? Relationships?
10. If you have stopped using drugs, did you quit “cold turkey” or use drugs like methadone to help you quit? Did you do it by yourself or did you go to a clinic?

There are other questions, but these should get you started. Good luck!
